York Region
York Region is one of Canada's most vibrant, diverse and tolerant regions, located immediately to the north of the City of Toronto. As one of Canada’s most culturally diverse communities, York Region is home to a thriving and harmonious multicultural society with a 40% immigrant population and dozens of native languages and faiths.
The region includes the cities of Markham and Vaughan, the towns of Aurora, East Gwillimbury, Georgina, Newmarket, Richmond Hill and Whitchurch-Stoufville, and the township of King - all of which make up our nine municipalities.
With more than one million residents, York Region's population is just under half that of Toronto and its Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered (LGBT) residents are estimated to number between 40,000 and 70,000.
The region covers 1,776 square kilometres (686 square miles) from Lake Simcoe in the north to the City of Toronto in the south. It borders Simcoe County and Peel Region in the west and Durham Region in the east. But despite its size and the diversity of its population, York Region enjoys the lowest crime rate in the Greater Toronto Area.

Proclaiming Pride Week
Earlier this year, we contacted the government offices of our region and its nine local municipalities to request that they proclaim June 11th-19th as Pride Week in 2016 and that they fly the rainbow flag throughout that week. The areas of the map on the right will change colour as we become aware of proclamations being issued by the local municipalities.
The Regional Municipality of York has formally recognized Pride Week 2016 as June 11-19.
